How to adjust captured inventory when cancelling orders
When you cancel an order, captured inventory is not automatically released back to stock. If you need to cancel an order but want to return some items to available inventory while keeping others captured, follow this workflow.
When to Use This:
- Releasing unsold inventory back to stock before cancelling an order
- Correcting inventory levels when an order won't be fully fulfilled due to out of stock items
Steps:
- Open the shipment group on the order you plan to cancel
- Uncapture inventory for the shipment
- This releases all captured inventory back to your available stock - Items remain on the order but are no longer holding inventory
- Adjust the line items
- Update quantities to reflect only what was actually shipped/sold - or just don't want to be returned to stock - DELETE any items that SHOULD be fully returned to stock
- Recapture inventory for the shipment
- This captures inventory based on your updated quantities - Only the items you kept will be held against stock
- Cancel the order if needed
- Items you removed or reduced are now back in available inventory - Items you kept remain captured as sold inventory
